The New Jersey Assembly passed legislation legalizing same-sex marriage on Thursday, sending the bill to Republican Governor Chris Christie, a possible vice-presidential candidate who has promised to veto the measure.

The Assembly vote of 42 to 33 followed Senate approval on Monday and increased the scrutiny on Christie, a supporter of Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney who has attempted to deflect controversy by saying the matter should be settled by voters in a referendum.

Both chambers lack the two-thirds majority needed to override a veto by Christie blocking gay marriage, a hot-button social issue that is gaining traction in the 2012 U.S. presidential election campaign.

In Maryland, the House of Delegates delayed until Thursday evening its debate on the contentious "Civil Marriage Protection Act" sponsored by Governor Martin O'Malley, who is seen as a rising star in the Democratic Party.

The bill was passed by two House committees on Tuesday, but it remains unclear if O'Malley and his allies have pulled together the 71 votes needed to clear the full House. Comparable legislation failed to pass a year ago when a number of African-American Democrats joined Republicans in opposing the bill.

O'Malley, a gay marriage supporter, has attempted to sway the black lawmakers, many of whom are hesitant to back an issue opposed by much of Maryland's black clergy.

I agree but people used to say the same thing about civil rights slavery and womens rights. But all three hapened without a female or african american or miinority president in office during the movements. Perhaps we will be able to truly be free without neefing to wait on a third party president because the way the government is curently. We will never have a third party president for the simple fact rhat people vote on party. not based on politics. Everythinga based off of political party or religouse beliefs or race or etc.. and it should be based off of politics if you ask me.

I understand that when he vetos it that you have until 2014 to get it over ridden and it CANT be put on a ballot. The problem is the religious nutjobs have hijacked marriage claiing it is religious! Marriage is CIVIL. Even if one is married by clergy they hold state authority to make it LEGAL just as any justice of the peace. Only difference is they do it in a religious setting. There is one way to solve this but the religious right wing bigoted zealots wont hear of it. REMOVE the word MARRIAGE and replace it with JOINING and then take away the authority from ALL clergy to witness it. Then the couple would go to the city or town hall, geth their JOINING license (for which they pay a fee...again the government is involved) and arrange for a JP to perform the ceremony. Now should they want it "blessed" they can then have the clergy do whatever ceremony they wish but the actual LEGAL joining is already done.
While this is THE solution the comunist republicans who are bigots and anti everything I stand for won't accept it. WHY? It goes against THEIR views and heaven forbid a gay person can share in the same missery of being married that strates do. At least we have a handful of states where gay CIVIL marriage is legal. They claim they want tp follow the constitution but when it goes against their homphobic racist anti everything views they want it put to a VOTE which they then spend oodles of money to lie and trick voters. Look at California and Prop 8. That was going to go thru and be defeated but the bigots hijacked the airwaves. The clergy made big speaches and put everything they could into defeating it only to nowe have it ruled unconstitutional. And what do thry bigots claim? Activist Judges, not following the constitution or the will of the voters. Well the constitution clearly showe the VOTE was unconstitutional. So now the bigots don't wanna hear that. Its not their agenda...

Sorry to go on so long here but this whole thing in insane. If all the millions of dollars that have been wasted on this were used to feed the hungry, clothe and hose those less fortunate it would be a good thing.. But as we know the rich don't care about the little guy, Only their comunist unamerican agenda.

NJ needs to begin a recall to have Christy removed. He is clearly NOT doing the will of the people who were stupid enough to put the guy in office. Woe betide this country should he ever be elected President!

tommy ever the pessemist, but your right, and mack lots of good points, but you fail to understand that being gay, is sexual orientation, not normal marriage, and in there religious bigots point of view all gays, lesbians, transgenders, and queers, are the enemies of normal society.
Also there are lots of lgtb groups, but most are not in contact with each other, even on here, ssssh, we dont mention that other site on facebook, or oh, gays.com thats a porn site, and the common one, who gives a fuck.
Even on here on equal marriage rights i have met derision, as though gay rights, or human rights in the world are unimportant.
Well to me they are, the same rights worldwide, irrespective of race, colour, religion, or political outlook, and until all groups join together, and fight for these rights, then lgtb, will be treated as a minority.
Over here in scotland & rest of the uk, same-sex religious marriage bill will no doubt be put into legislation within the next 3 years.
Recentely on my fb page where some from here are my friend on that site, one of my transgender friends, i put forward there name to join in the equal marriage rights, reluctantly she talked to the group and found out that if one is in a civil partnership, and a partner decides to change sex, they have first got to divorce, apply for a special licence, and the remarry.
She was clearly upset, as it is so unfair, and i agree its not right.
Thats just one of the reasons why all should help fight for equal rights, and do online petetion, www.change.org and www.allout.org these two sites do online petetions, the latter one gay issues, the former all human rights including gay ones.
check it out , and get involved.

you will notice that i left bi-sexuals out, that because there a differcult group that gays, lesbians, transgenders, seem to mistrust, but just like the s8s, that support equal rights, they should not have to feel segerated.
Like i said all join together, and get involved.

Gov. Chris Christie has followed through on his promise to reject a bill allowing same-sex marriage in New Jersey by quickly vetoing the measure Friday and renewing his call for a ballot question to decide the issue.

The veto came a day after the state Assembly passed the bill. The state Senate had passed it on Monday. Christie, a Republican who opposes same-sex marriage, had vowed "very swift action" once the measure reached his desk.

In returning the bill to the Legislature, Christie reaffirmed his view that voters should decide whether to change the definition of marriage in New Jersey. His veto also proposed creating an ombudsman to oversee compliance with the state's civil union law, which same-sex couples have said is flawed and promotes discrimination.

"I am adhering to what I've said since this bill was first introduced — an issue of this magnitude and importance, which requires a constitutional amendment, should be left to the people of New Jersey to decide," Christie said in a statement. "I continue to encourage the Legislature to trust the people of New Jersey and seek their input by allowing our citizens to vote on a question that represents a profoundly significant societal change. This is the only path to amend our State Constitution and the best way to resolve the issue of same-sex marriage in our state.

"I have been just as adamant that same-sex couples in a civil union deserve the very same rights and benefits enjoyed by married couples — as well as the strict enforcement of those rights and benefits," the statement continued. "Discrimination should not be tolerated and any complaint alleging a violation of a citizen's right should be investigated and, if appropriate, remedied. To that end, I include in my conditional veto the creation of a strong Ombudsman for Civil Unions to carry on New Jersey's strong tradition of tolerance and fairness."

Democrats who had pushed the bill forward said they were disappointed, but not surprised, by Christie's action.
